FERRUM., Va. – Virginia State Police are currently investigating a shooting incident that occurred at a Franklin County, Va., residence Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014. The incident began as a robbery and ended in a shoot-out with local law enforcement. One Henry County man faces multiple charges related to the incident; a second Henry County man is facing charges upon recovery from non-life threatening injuries sustained in the shooting

Shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday, two armed male subjects entered a residence in the 4400 block of Prillaman Switch Road in Ferrum, and confronted the homeowner. The homeowner fired at the men and a shoot-out ensued between them. During the course of the shooting, a 911 hang-up call was made to the sheriff’s office.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Ferrum Police Department responded to the scene to follow up on the 911 hang-up. When they arrived, the two robbers exited the residence. The robbers and law enforcement exchanged gunfire outside the residence.

No deputies or officers were injured in the shooting. Neither the adult male nor a female adult inside the residence was injured in the shooting inside the residence.

One of the robbers, a 31-year-old Henry County man was injured in the shooting. He was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Charges are pending at this time.

Christopher Hardin Jr., 34, of Bassett, Va., fled on foot from the scene. State and local law enforcement immediately surrounded the area to search for the subject. A state police helicopter assisted with the search. Shortly after midnight Wednesday, Hardin was taken into custody without incident. A handgun was recovered.

Hardin is being held at the Western Virginia Regional Jail in Salem, Va., in one felony count of armed robbery and one count of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

State police seized marijuana and drug paraphernalia from inside the residence.

At the request of the Franklin County Commonwealth’s Attorney, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Salem Field Office “Police Shooting Investigative Team” is investigating the robbery and officer-involved shooting. The investigation remains ongoing at this time.
